OPM SONG “Buko”

“Buko” was a sweet, romantic song. However, “Mangga,” was not the sweet and romantic song that its fruity namesake was. Instead, the song is about the bitterness and anger one feels after finding out that the person you thought was the love of your life was actually nothing more than a cheater, who would dump you for someone better as soon as the moment presented itself.

At the song’s chorus, Jireh sings about his own gullibility, of falling prey to this woman and her web of lies. He cautions her that he knows her secret, and that he will have his revenge one day soon. But we’re hopeful that, compared to Jireh’s other songs, this was not based on a real-life experience, because really, who would want to be cheated on? If it were based on real experience, we’re hoping Jireh chooses to be the bigger man and not resort to violence, no matter how angry he is.

The music video itself starts on a light tone, showing Jireh and his lover sharing an intimate moment, only to be ruined by the realization that this woman is a cheater, and that all her love for him was nothing genuine or lasting. As said perfectly clear by Jireh himself, “May araw ka ring leche ka.” Truly, karma has a funny way of manifesting itself.
